Foo Fighters Head to D.C. to Rock White House Fourth of July Bash

The Foo Fighters will take a short break from their extended hiatus when they play a very special Fourth of July party this Saturday — at the White House! Rolling Stone has learned that the band will perform a short set as part of the annual festivities on the South Lawn, which has an unblemished view of the capital’s elaborate fireworks display. Earlier this week, President Obama invited staffers and their immediate families to the official First Family celebration; and it should be noted that back in January, it was many of those same staffers who campaigned for the Arcade Fire to play their much-deserved victory ball on inauguration night.

Frontman Dave Grohl, who’s been on full-time daddy duty since second daughter Harper was born on April 17th, is known to get antsy in between albums, but with bassist Nate Mendel reuniting his original band, Sunny Day Real Estate, for a national tour that kicks off in September, and word spreading of a possible Grohl side-project involving Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, any Foos activity would have been a complete surprise, never mind this unexpected booking. To that end, when we ran into the rocker near his current home turf — L.A.’s San Fernando Valley — Grohl was visibly excited about the one-off gig in D.C. (the city where he honed his punk rock chops as a teen living in nearby Alexandria, Virginia) and the opportunity to play for “Him.” A rep for the band would not confirm the booking when contacted by RS.

Kevin Jonas Gets Engaged to Longtime Girlfriend

Photo: Alvarez/Getty

Kevin Jonas took a break from the Jonas Brothers’ current arena tour for a very special reason: to propose to his girlfriend of two years at her New Jersey home. Kevin, 21, has been dating Danielle Deleasa, 22, since the pair met while vacationing with their families in the Bahamas in 2007. He took an overnight flight after last night’s show in Vancouver for the early morning surprise.

“She said yes, yes, yes like 500 times super fast in a row,” Kevin told People. “It was tough performing last night, knowing that I was going to ask the biggest question in my life to the most amazing girl in the world.”

In a statement, Jonas’ parents say, “Our hearts are filled with joy today and we are happy to share with you that our son Kevin has asked Danielle for her hand in marriage. Her answer was yes, and it is such a blessing that she will be joining our family. Kevin and Danielle have not yet set a date. Family is very dear to us, and we hope we have raised Kevin to be a wonderful man and husband. Please join us in our family’s celebration and in congratulating Kevin and Danielle. Thank you for all of your support.”

Younger brothers Joe and Nick Tweeted their excitement: “congrats big brother…..Dani welcome to the family, we can’t wait to have you join us on the road! love Joe and Nick.”

While Kevin is now officially off the market, Joe and Nick remain unmarried — but in relationships. Nick is rumored to be reunited with former flame Miley Cyrus, while Joe — who talked to Rolling Stone about his very public break-up with Taylor Swift — is currently linked to actress Camilla Belle.

Crosby, Stills and Nash on 40 Years of Music, Working With Rick Rubin

<a href="http

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash are certainly aware they’ve been working together for a long time, but when Rolling Stone spelled out a number — 40 years — the figure still stunned the trio. “It certainly seems to have gone very quickly,” Nash told RS during a recent trip to our offices. “In my memory it’s like yesterday,” he said. “We love each other,” Stills added. Which is clearly what’s helped keep them on the road and in the studio together for so long despite some major hiccups along the way.

The other major factor: creative synergy. “For me, it has to do with the music,” Crosby said. “I love both of them as human beings, but they keep coming to me with music that is absolute magic to me. It’s a completely different chemistry. Each human being has a completely different vibe, and the four of us [including Neil Young] is a completely different chemistry than the three of us or two of us or solo, and that’s fascinating and it keeps it fresh.”

The trio have been trying something kind of new during studio sessions with Rick Rubin for their upcoming covers album. “Stephen has been doing it on his solo tour and it really worked for him, and he said, let’s do it,” Crosby said. “It’s kind of a brave step, but it has been working.” Nash revealed the answer to the question, “What would be the audience’s reaction to Crosby, Stills and Nash doing other people’s stuff?” has been fantastic. And he says Rubin is a more “traditional producer” than people think. “He only concentrates on the music,” Nash said, describing how Rubin would insist on tinkering with chorus placement. And he listens “like nobody I ever saw,” noted Stills.

Britney Spears’ “Radar” Video Barely Registers A Bleep

The story of Britney Spears’ new video for “Radar” is a strange one: The song was originally the third track on Brit’s 2007 album Blackout and charted that year on the Hot 100. Then it inexplicably reappeared in its exact same form as a bonus track to 2008’s Circus (Spears’ publicist responded it was the same version when RS reviewed Circus last year). Now, in 2009, “Radar” returns once again as a music video. For a song that’s been around so long, you’d expect that better ideas would have percolated during its video’s pre-production stages — especially after the great clips for “Womanizer,” “Circus” and “If U Seek Amy” — but instead we’re treated to Spears’ weakest video since the disastrous “Gimme More” spot.

The plot is eerily similar too, with the Dave Meyers-directed video essentially copycatting Madonna’s “Take A Bow” video. Instead of falling in love with a matador like the Material Girl, Spears has her eye on a polo player. While Madonna dressed the role of a distressed aristocratic senorita in the stands, Spears’ wardrobe and giant hat mirror the elite at the Kentucky Derby. Instead of montage shots of bulls, we see horses. The major difference here is that there’s a love triangle, even though none of the people involved actually seem to like each other as they stare vacantly off camera half the time. It feels like they took a 30-second commercial for one of Spears’ perfumes and turned it into a four-minute music video.

So where does Britney’s “Radar” rank in the pantheon of all her music videos? Is it better than “Lucky,” another video Meyers helmed for Spears? Check out Rolling Stone’s Britney Spears: The Complete Video Guide and judge for yourself.

Aerosmith on the Road: Backstage With Steven Tyler and Co.

Photo: Josh Rothstein for Rolling Stone

While Joe Perry lounges in a giant tour bus with a portrait of himself emblazoned the side, Steven Tyler is in his dressing room, dubbed “the Cave,” mimicking his stage moves in a device that looks like vertical trampoline. Rolling Stone got a rare look behind Aerosmith’s monster summer tour at their hometown gig — a show at Mansfield, Massachusetts’ Comcast Center — and in the new issue Brian Hiatt has the full story from their June 16th homecoming gig, a show in front of 20,000 including their family, friends and their longtime fans.

(Go behind Aerosmith’s homecoming show in exclusive backstage photos.)

Aerosmith have fought several battle in recent years: Tyler fought off pneumonia, guitarist Perry’s artificial knee became infected and guitarist Brad Whitford was forced to miss the opening shows of the band’s current tour because of an injury he sustained after bumping his head while exiting his Ferrari. Still, to quote the opening song from the Mansfield show, the “Train Kept a Rollin’,” and the band soldiered on to give the Boston fans an energetic set that featured their entire Toys in the Attic and a messy cover of the Standell’s “Dirty Water” featuring members of the night’s opening act, native sons the Dropkick Murphys.

Things have changed, however, since the days when Toys in the Attic was released. Not only is the band drug-free, they travel separately and settle into different dressing rooms. “We were such a tight unit, working every night, and all of the personality differences came out,” Tyler tells Rolling Stone. “Now a lot of that childish stuff is behind us.” For much more from backstage on the Aerosmith tour, including bassist Tom Hamilton working on a new song, check out the new issue of Rolling Stone. Michael Jackson’s Will Filed, Names Diana Ross as Guardian

Photo: Galella/WireImage

Michael Jackson’s five-page will from 2002 was filed today in a Los Angeles court, leaving all his assets in the hands of the Michael Jackson Family Trust. Michael’s mother Katherine Jackson was named the guardian of his three children, but in the will’s most surprising detail Jackson left his three children to singer Diana Ross if Katherine was unable to care for the children.

“If any of my children are minors at the time of my death, I nominate my mother, Katherine Jackson as guardian of the persons and estate of such minor children. If Katherine Jackson fails to survive me, or is unable or unwilling to act as guardian, I nominate Diana Ross as guardian of the persons and estates of such minor children,” Jackson’s will stated. According to the will, which was posted in its entirety on TMZ, the document was “amended and restated” on March 22nd, 2002 and executed on July 7th of the same year.

“I have intentionally omitted provide for my former wife, Deborah Jean Rowe Jackson,” Jackson’s will also stated. The three co-executors of the will are listed as John Branca, John McClain and Barry Siegel. According to TMZ, Branca was Jackson’s lawyer, McClain is a music exec and Siegel was Jackson’s accountant but resigned from the executor board in 2003. According to the will, the executors have “full power and authority at any time or times to sell, lease, mortgage, pledge, exchange or otherwise dispose of the property, whether real or, personal comprising my estate, upon such terms as my Executors shall deem best, to continue any business enterprises, to purchase assets from my estate” and other similar duties regarding Jackson’s assets.

While funeral arrangements have still not been made for Jackson, sources tell the Los Angeles Times that Michael Jackson will not be buried at Neverland Ranch due to bureaucratic reasons. According to California state law, one cannot be buried at a private residence, and while officials were hopeful they could sidestep the law — and even Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger offered to help with the red tape — it appears unlikely that they could not get past the legal hurdle. “It’s nobody’s fault. Everybody in Santa Barbara feels bad about it,” the source told the LAT.

Meanwhile, despite previous reports, it also seems unlikely that Jackson’s public memorial will be held at Neverland, as the crush of traffic appears to be too daunting for local officials to prepare in time. Instead, the Los Angeles Times say a possible public memorial might take place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, which was also the home of the This Is It! rehearsals. This afternoon, the Jackson family issued a statement confirming a Neverland viewing is off the table:

“Contrary to previous news reports, the Jackson family is officially stating that there will be no public or private viewing at Neverland. Plans are underway regarding a public memorial for Michael Jackson, and we will announce those plans shortly.”

The Jackson family has not yet spoken to city officials in either Santa Barbara or Los Angeles pertaining to Jackson’s memorial service or funeral arrangements.

Beach Boys’ Al Jardine on Fleet Foxes: “They’re Awesome!”

Photo: Sabau/Getty
At last month’s Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the Beach Boys’ Al Jardine let Rolling Stone in on his latest obsession: Seattle’s Fleet Foxes.”They’re awesome,” he told RS. “They kind of have the Beach Boys vibe, too — very beautiful harmonies. They’re just taking the world by storm, and without any singles.”

Jardine met the Foxes when they came to his studio in Big Sur, California, where he says the group plans to do some recording work of their own, and adds the band has offered to sing on Jardine’s own upcoming A Postcard from California. Last fall, Fleet Foxes singer Robin Pecknold told Pitchfork of the meeting, saying Jardine was “was amazing. A really sweet guy,” and drummer Josh Tillman reported the band was given a sneak peek at a then-unheard track Jardine recorded with Neil Young, David Crosby and Stephen Stills.

The track seems to be, “A California Saga,” which will also appear on Jardine’s upcoming Postcard, and Jardine calls it a personal favorite. “It has truth and it has value. Neil Young and Crosby and Stills help give it integrity,” he says. No word yet on which track the Foxes may appear on, but Jardine says he hopes Postcard — also featuring appearanes by Brian Wilson and Beach Boys friend John Stamos — will have a labor day release.

Though Jardine admitted his focus on the new album kept him away from hearing as much new music as he’d like, there’s one other current act that’s caught his ear: Jason Mraz. Jardine says he likes the style of Mraz (who was presented with the Hal David Starlight Award for “making a significant impact on the music industry via his original songs” at the ceremony): “He’s very lyrically present and musically accounted for.”

Jay-Z Talks Ditching Def Jam, New Deals: “I’m an Entrepreneur”

Photo: Winter/Getty

Jay-Z has confirmed the destinations of his Blueprint 3 and Roc Nation label, telling Billboard that his new album will be released on Atlantic Records while the label he formed after signing a 360 deal with Live Nation is bound to Sony Music. Prior to the official announcement, it seemed like there was a bidding war between Warner Music (which houses Atlantic Records) and Sony Music to be Jigga’s distributor, but the ever-entrepreneurial rapper ended up striking deals with both sides.

“Roc Nation — we’re experts in marketing and making records. But we do distribution deals,” Jay-Z told Billboard. “On this one [Blueprint 3], we’re working directly with the Atlantic staff… For the rest of the Roc Nation artists, we did a distribution deal with Sony.” Jay-Z has ties with both labels: Atlantic Records is under the jurisdiction of Warner Music CEO Lyon Cohen, who worked with Jay at Def Jam and also appears in the rapper’s new “D.O.A.” video. Over at Sony Music, subsidiary Epic Records is run by Amanda Ghost, who is also managed by Roc Nation. Plus, Jay’s wife Beyoncé is signed to Sony Music’s Columbia Records.

As Rock Daily previously reported, Jay-Z bought out his Def Jam contract for $5 million, giving him freedom to take Blueprint 3 elsewhere. As Jay-Z tells Billboard, he became increasingly frustrated by Def Jam’s stodgy approach to distribution deals. “You have to figure, this is like four years ago, and to them it was just like, ‘Are you crazy? No! Make a song!’ ” Jay said. “To me it was like, I’ve sold companies for huge amounts of money. I’m an entrepreneur — that’s what I’ve been all my life. I can’t just sit here and make records and not do anything else. Why wouldn’t you want to do this with me? I felt under-utilized.” The Blueprint 3 is out September 11th, exactly eight years to the day the rapper’s original Blueprint was released.

Breaking: Screaming Females

Who: Bred in one of the country’s strongest DIY punk communities, the New Brunswick, New Jersey-based trio Screaming Females have actually got only one shrieking lady. Her name is Marissa Paternoster, and she is 2009’s answer to Sleater-Kinney’s 2006 breakup, using her throaty pipes and serious chops to channel that trio’s femme-shredder legacy to a new generation. The band’s pint-size leader — whose signature stage attire includes a mandarin Sergeant Pepper-style dress and a bowl haircut covering her eyes — is known for ripping until her fingers bleed.

Sounds Like: Screaming Females’ third full-length and first-ever label release Power Move is packed with fuzzy riffs and gritty, epic solos layered over Mike Rickenbacker’s disciplined bass lines, with drummer Jarrett Dougherty’s fierce beats pushing it all forward. The LP gets poppy on “Bell” and psychedelic on “Skull,” but Paternoster’s core influences (”I listen to Sleater-Kinney and the Pixies”) shine through.

Vital Stats:

• Over the past four years, Screaming Females have played over 300 self-booked shows. Opening slots with Throwing Muses and Dinosaur Jr. in recent months have primed the band for their summertime gig: a 13-date run opening up for the Dead Weather in July. Back in May, Screaming Females was tearing down a Nashville bar when “Some of the guys from the Raconteurs were there, and saw us play,” Paternoster says. Bassist Jack Lawrence approached with a business card for Third Man Records, and told them to get in touch. The band was confirmed to open up on the tour a few weeks later. “The venue we played with Dinosaur Jr. the other night was pretty big,” Dougherty, 25, says of Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. “But it was like, three times smaller than the smallest place we’re playing with the Dead Weather. This is gonna be huge.”

• Shortly after Screaming Females started up in 2006, Dougherty began suffering from a serious case of tendonitis, barring him from his drumming duties for weeks on end. “I was terrified that this band was going to end before it even started,” he says. But he got a copy of Our Band Could Be Your Life, Michael Azzarad’s 2001 book that recalls the stories of 1981-1991’s DIY legends. “I read that book a whole bunch of times in a row, and it just changed my view on everything,” he admits. The band has since prided itself on its DIY mindset: they’ve spent the majority of their time as a band playing DIY shows, self-releasing albums and booking all of their own shows.

• Rickenbacker and Pasternoster go way back — as kids, they had the same choir instructor, Miss Perino, for years. Despite their growing success, the band remains humble, but there’s a few perks the singer-guitarist is willing to accept: “With the Dead Weather, we’ll be playing through really expensive sound systems. And get bottled water, and I think we get a deli tray,” she says. “Everything I ever dreamed of. Poland Spring, and like, deli meat. It’s all coming together for me.”
